Plastics processing machine operator

Median salary: $33,072
5-yr. salary growth: +9%
5-yr. growth in employees (2006-2012): -42.41%
Total employees (2012):  2,010
Example job types: bag machine operator, injection moulder, sheeter operator
Employed by: plastic products manufacturing companies
Slow economic growth in the plastics industry has meant significantly fewer jobs here over the previous decade. Environmental efforts to reduce plastics use may also be a factor. The industry is nevertheless a valuable one at $17.6 billion annually and accounts for 2% of world production. On the plus side, the federal government suggests there is actually a building shortage of some specific jobs such as mould and die makers and salary growth overall has been positive.

Printing machine operator

Median salary: $37,440
5-yr. salary growth: 0%
5-yr. growth in employees (2006-2012): -42.86%
Total employees (2012): 4,400
Example job types: balloon printer, colour copier operator, screen print operator
Employed by: rapid printing services, commercial printing companies and in manufacturing and other establishments that have in-house printing facilities
The story here points to technology, where rapid and fairly constant improvements in technology since the 1990s have conspired to limit job prospects. Employment here also closely follows the fortunes of the printing industry, which has been hammered by the rise of the paperless office. Note that this classification does not include printing press operators.

Foundry worker

Median salary: $43,680
5-yr. salary growth: +5%
5-yr growth in employees (2006-2012): -43.14%
Total employees (2012): 2,900
Example job types:  casting machine operator, induction furnace operator, wax-pattern moulder
Employed by: metal foundries and foundry departments of metal products manufacturing companies
Among the best paid of the worst jobs—you know, what with all of the… lava and stuff. But again, the recession impacted manufacturing worldwide, leading to employment declines in the sector. It doesn’t employ many people to begin with but the good news is the sector isn’t as negatively affected by improvements in productivity as are some other related jobs. As such the federal government is predicting improvement in this category in coming years.

Labourer, wood, pulp and paper processing

Median salary: $39,520
5-yr. salary growth: +23%
5-yr growth in employees (2006-2012): -43.39%
Total employees (2012): 19,700
Example job types: sawmill bolt loader, dry chainman/woman, thrasher feeder
Employed by: pulp and paper, and paper converting companies, sawmills, planing mills, wood treatment plants, waferboard plants and other wood processing companies
An anomaly of sorts in that employment continues to trend down, but salary growth is way up—far above the next worst job (harvesting labourers). It’s not the safest job, given the prevalence of machines and objects with sharp teeth, so there’s a wage premium to be had even as market slowdowns take their toll on overall employment. However, the outlook here isn’t substantially different from that of their close cousins, the pulp mill operators. Service Canada's verdict on future prospects: limited.

Rubber processing machine operator

Median salary: $38,500.80
5-yr. salary growth: -3%
5-yr growth in employees (2006-2012): -45.39%
Total employees (2012): 7,700
Example job types: rubber goods assembler, foam rubber mixer, padded products repairer
Employed by: tire manufacturers and other rubber products manufacturing companies
Work in this sector touches several industries, including rubber, plastics and auto parts manufacture. With the economic recession, markets have suffered and so available work has declined. Unfortunately, salary growth is down; in fact, among the 10 worst jobs, this category is the only one to record a decline in that metric.

General office clerk
Median salary: $35,360
5-yr. salary growth: +3%
5-yr growth in employees (2006-2012): -46.22%
Total employees (2012): 42,000
Example job types: Braille volumes transcriber, gas meter reader, typist
Employed by: offices throughout the public and private sectorsIt’s important to immediately point out that this classification does not include receptionists and certain specialized clerks such as in finance. But it does include jobs like gas meter reader and with the proliferation of technology like smart meters and remote data collection, general office clerk isn’t a growth area. And those that are in offices have seen themselves “rationalized” out of a job as economic contraction has forced staff reductions with the work simply added to the plates of remaining staff. But compared to the other jobs in this list, clerks have the highest employment number at 42,000 and salary growth remains positive.

Harvesting labourer

Median salary: $22,360
5-yr. salary growth: +12%
5-yr growth in employees (2006-2012): -57.24%
Total employees (2012): 6,500
Example job types: fruit picker, harvest hand, vegetable packer
Employed by: N/A
Harvesting, sorting and packing crops isn’t an easy gig, and it doesn’t pay well, either. But it’s also the sort of job susceptible to mechanization or automation, especially on the sorting and packing side. However, job declines have slowed since 2011, possibly the partial result of increasing prices for agricultural products; and wages are up 2% from last year for an overall five-year gain of 12%. Service Canada describes job prospects in this category as “fair.” Note that general farm workers are not included in this category.

Weaver or knitter

Median salary: $29,120
5-yr. salary growth: 0%
5-yr growth in employees (2006-2012): -57.97%
Total employees (2012): 2,900
Example job types: crochet machine operator, hosiery knitter, textile rope maker
Employed by: textile companies and by garment and mattress manufacturing companies
Weavers and knitters held the crown of worst job in Canada as late as last year, but a slight slowdown in the rate of job loss has saved it from the distinction. That may have to do with a significant uptick—17%—in median salary between this year and last, although growth overall is flat. Note that this classification actually excludes “craft weavers”—artists, more or less. (They just do it for love.) Nevertheless, the garment industry is no longer a significant presence in the Canadian landscape, with most work long migrated to places like China, Bangladesh and Mexico.

Photographic and film processor
Median salary: $23,212.80
5-yr. salary growth: +8%
5-yr growth in employees (2006-2012): -58.54%
Total employees (2012): 3,400
Example job types: dark room technician, negative cutter, x-ray plate developer
Employed by: film processing laboratories and retail photofinishing establishments
Still dead, Jim. As surely as the rise of cheap digital tech killed the compact disc, cheap digital tech has killed photo and film processing. Standard bearer Kodak gave up the ghost last year, along with its too little, too late foray into the consumer digital camera market. While the company is scheduled to emerge from bankruptcy this year, there’s evidently not much work in the industry, whether in retail or manufacturing. Down to 3,400 workers and a median salary of $23,000, there’s little future here except at the very high-end in feature film production or specialty photography.

Pulp mill operator

Median salary: $56,160
5-yr. salary growth: +8%
5-yr growth in employees (2006-2012): -66.67%
Total employees (2012): 1,800
Example job types: bleach boiler tender, chemi-wash operator, wood pulp caustic liquor maker
Employed by: pulp and paper companies
This is as bad as it gets. Pulp and paper isn’t an industry you want to be in right now, despite the $34-billion sector being a leading contributor to Canada’s GDP. The global economic slowdown has taken its toll, as have issues like overcapacity, the environment (those beetle infestations haven't helped either) and rising costs. According to a PriceWaterhouseCoopers report, 92% of CEOs have implemented cuts of some kind in the last 18 months and 89% are planning more over the next 12. Of that latter total, 18% of CEOs plan to cut by more than 8% in 2013.
